DIRECTION FINDING
I have received some “interesting" information on the
possible location of some stations - I would be interested
in hearinq from anyone with use of directional equipment,
I am 'keen that work is done on the general locations of
stations, so if you can help please do get in contact.
Not every station is operated by state or government
agencies so if you have any suggestion however off-beat
please let me know.

LETTERS TO ENIGMA
First off lots of interest in the name ENIGMA, I must say
that I did'nt think of it, but I would like to thank David
m Weymouth who did, I'm afraid I forgot to mention this
before but a letter from Mr O' Daly prompted me into action.
Ihank you aiso David for all the Female Phonetic Station
logs .
I rece fved a very interesting letter from Derek in Epsom,
but no return address, I would very much like to receive
further information so Derek please contact me aqain,
thanks .
Hello to Leo in Sunderland and thank you for your logs
of the lemale Phonetic Stations, Leo wrote out part of a
transmission from ULX on 4880 kHz, the message started
1C.T. JZUG OMOXM JTSTC ZKGFG TNRGI UFFZ UMJO" ect, perhaps
a feature on coding might help, to my knowledge no SW
listner • has ever decoded either a number or phonetic
transmission, but ve can keep trying ?.
I hank you to Tom from Macclesfield (who is at present
working in ^Blackpool ) for his kind comments about ENIGMA
in the BDXC Magazine "Communication", also hello to Ian
at BDXC who showed copies of ENIGMA at the Reading meetinq
which prompted Roger from Didcot to write.
From Bangor writes Ross with another logging of the Female
Phonetic stations this time KPA on 7446 kHz at 17.20 hrs,
J hope you will find our reature on these stations of use
m locating yet more.
Greetings to Phil in Romford, he is an old hand at Numbers
listening from the 1 970 's, Phil says he misses some of the
more individual^ stations but is pleased that Swedish
Rhapsody is still going, well we are working on a full
schedule for this station at present and will include it
in our 1994 issue number 4 out in early January.
A quick hello to Ken in Doncaster, thank you for all the
information from Monitoring Times, I hope that log-book
from the USA will become a regular feature.
Talking of the USA Hi, to Lee in Lempster - Lee tells
rne that Havana Moons Numbers newsletter is now defunct,
Lee i l keen to he^p and I would be very pleased to receive
information from the United States, particularly News &
Logs - also perhaps publicity for ENIGMA via US
publications .
On that very subject (publications that is) Ashley writes
i rom New Plymoutn in New Zealand, he asks if it would be
.i I right- to pass on information printed in ENIGMA for use in
i hr publication issued by the New Zealand DX League, well
wn would be delighted to be know in New Zealand, may I just
:.,iy to all readers that any information in ENIGMA may
l "' reproduced - a mention for ENIGMA is appreciated.
m. lying with Ashley, he reported hearing the American voice
Count Station in English - between 12.00 and 12.50 UTC
mi 13555 kHz calling agent 394, hope to receive more logs
i 1 1 >m you Ashley.
Maying overseas - quick hello's to Ez2arrak in Morocco
Philippe in Le Vestinet in France, Giorgio in Undine
in Italy and a warm welcome to Mort in Baldwinsville
nrvir Syracuse New York, Mart said he heard about ENIGMA
in t* e August issue of DX Ontario, now after that trip
n round the world it's back to Britain.
ISN 1G MA NEWS FROM CHRIS
ENIGMA goes Hi-Tech (unlike myself) all thanks to Mike
Chace in Bath who will co -ordinate the Electronic side
of the group thanks to his involvment with USENET - Mike
i s keen to hear from anyone who may have reference
material, archive articles and logs which will then be
passed on for use in future issues, you can contact Mike
at :
Mike Chace <mikecepraxis.co.uk>
Mikes hard work is helping ENIGMA to be known worldwide.
DEDICATED MONITORS
One of the big things about number station is that they do
not stay the same and things change very guickly, the number
of readers are growing daily and I would like to float the
idea of dedicated monitors who perhaps could study some of
the stations to draw up schedules and keep our information
upto date. If you could spare some time to study just one
station during the three months between each issue, please
let me know, I am particulary keen to work on some of the
smaller stations .
FINANCE
Please don't turn the page - when ENIGMA started I did'nt
think it would now have over 50 readers, I am most gratful
for all the SAE's and Stamps I have received plus gifts,
I would like to ask if you think ENIGMA is the sort of thing
you would buy IF we introduced a small charge for the year
- the next issue will be free and sent out in early January
1994, please let me have your comments - I would not see
any subscription above £3.00 for four issues which would
cover postage stationary and photo-copying, depending on
your reaction - !!!!!!
TYROLEAN MUSIC STATION
Does anyone remember tr.e Tyrolean Music & Numbers station"
This station operatec in the 1970 's, it operated on
Saturday & Sunday's on 6425 & 6660 kHz and was almost
certainly the most individual Numbers Station of them all.
Messages were addressed to named agents in German, and the
transmitting site was probably on the French /Swiss border.
This station was familiar to all users of the Echo Charlie
Pirate Band. If you have any information about this station
- however slight - please write to Mike Gauffman c/o the
ENIGMA Newsletter.
The typical Tyrolean format : 11.30 Saturday & Sunday 3
tunes were played, same each day. Blank carrier until 11.55
rhen repeated interval signature tune - 7 note orchestral
taken from the Communist Internationale (towards the end)
11.59 the interval signal speeded up. 12.00 German Male then
announces names of agents e.g. Heinrich, Fowler, Dover.
Messages then follow for each agent separately (no group
count). Messages are then repeated faster,. "Ende".
Occasionally bizarre variations to this standard format,
e.g. a fourth tune then added. Non-standard tunes played
interspersed with cryptic messages read out by the same
announcer such as " Der Sunne Shein vorlisch » (the sun
fll nSS 'l°T- out Fi 9ures were also read out but at random
NOT in 5 figure groups. Lists of German words were also
sent and the station suffered occasion jamming of both
channels. Peculiar sounds, whistles, tape recorders beina
re-wound. y
To^ St f tl0n eVen sent ChristITi as greetings on 26th December
19/1. Largest group counts were 29 the smallest 4 and an
average of 12. Occasional irregular addresses were also
heard for Franz, Kruz, Helmut, Nul, Renault & Nufpord.
Don't, forget - if you have ANY information about tVs
station please send it to ENIGMA and I will pass it onto

found on some new frequencies, out went 4468 & 6880 S, 574-7

station at the present time is in the 41 metre brodacast

while old regular 9251 kHz continues. New HF channels have

Ai first the powerful warble jammers were unable to

US COUNT STATION
This station is still going strong and suffers odd bouts
of both warble and white noise jamming, it can be best heard
in English with the occasional German transmission. This
station will be featured in issue 4 - so I shall not say
too much about it today. 1
One thing to watch out for is a wide range of control
freguencies, these transmit on on the half hour and
consist of 2 or 3 Four figure blocks which are repeated
for 10 minutes only. Our view of the is that they send
a very short message, perhaps the time and frequencies
of the full message broadcasts.

S I MON MASON W RITES... THE GERMAN TWO LETTER
STATIONS 1990-1993
There have been many changes in the past three years to the
numbers station scene and the 2 letter stations are no
exception. In that period, PAPA NOVEMBER has ended and
DFC 3 7 (3370) & DFD2i (4010) have also vanished.
I'APA NOVEMBER was as regular as clockwork on shortwave for
at. least 25 years. It broadcast, on 2707/5015/7404/11108 kHz
at 0000/0600/1200/1800 with repeats at 30 minutes past,
every day of the year. However, during November 1992 it
ended abruptly.
What was happening to PAPA NOVEMBER'S stablemates DFC37
& DFD21 around this time ?. Not alot, they were still
operating on 3370 and 4010 between 1500 & 2200 TJTC.
About this time I received word from a fellow DXer
about these stations. He said that he had seen the official
ITU frequency guide and indeed DFC37 & DFD21 were in it.
Of course PN and all the other 2 Letter stations were not,
their callsigns being '‘tjjiofif icial" . He could 'nt remember
exact details but he said that they were running 15 kW
transmitters and * M ■ 1 ■ 1 1 * ‘ firom lionames, Western Germany.
The supposed targets were Rome & New York.
It. is probable that the transmitter site was and is being
iim by Mia Deutsche Bunderspost with the actual traffic
being supplied by a third party, probably the German
Intelligence Service, Bundes- NachrichtenDienst or BND .
mil tally the majority of broadcast were for agents in
the DDR using modified East German receivers, but since
unification, I suppose the transmissions are for BND
agents all over the place.
German DXer Nils Schiffhauer writing in a Monitoring
Times article has given another possible transmitter site.
He say that there is a big transmitter and receiving
site near liusum, Schleswig-Holstein call "Krumweg" .
A month after the demise of PAPA NOVEMBER, DFC37 and
DFD21 also fell silent. In the last days of 1992 it
seemed that the 2-letter stations days were "numbered"
but 9 months later they are still very active.
Since the other stations closed some agents have now
been tagged onto other 2 letter stations,’ another
development is that 11108 which was solely and
exclusively a PAPA NOVEMBER frequency has been noted
carrying traffic for other 2 letter stations, notably
PD S, MD.
Further to Simons article we have looked at some maps
of Germany, although Bonames does not appear (please
write if you know anything about it) we have located
Hu sum Schleswig Holstein,
~ this is a sea port town which borders the North See
on the West Coast close to Denmark, population 25,00C
Old Prussia now known has North Friesland, Government
buildings on the out skirts of the town.
The 2 letter stations operate in the main between abc
16.00 & 23.00 UTC , we have put together a schedule be
on logging in the Summer, however on the 1st of Septe
the organisation behind these transmission changed tc
winter frequencies and moved more towards the 3 to 7
channels, the result of this is that, although, the sta
appear at the times listed it might be best to try se
channels from the list below close to the ones in the
schedule. Just to make it all more fun - not all stat
appear each week, some are on every second week or ev
every month.
Try to listen for MIKE DELTA or DELTA MIKE which are
English .
Here is a list of all stations heard by Simon in 1993
along with the three figure identification (agent)
numbers .
